Frequently Asked Questions

What is Epsom salt?

Epsom salt — otherwise known as magnesium sulphate — is a mineral compound believed to have many health benefits. It is naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial and can leave dry skin feeling soft and smooth.

Are there any risks or side-effects?

There are few side effects to floating, but on a rare basis hallucinations and motion sickness may occur. If the salt solution gets into any cuts, abrasions, or eyes, it will cause stinging. Drowning is nearly impossible under normal circumstances. To mitigate any risks, please do not float under the influence of drugs or alcohol or if you have a medical condition such as uncontrolled epilepsy. If the salt solution is swallowed, it could cause illness. The disinfecting standards and procedures are very stringent, so developing an infection from the float pool is highly unlikely.

What if I fall asleep?

The experience of floating is so relaxing that it’s not unusual to fall asleep, and that’s fine. If you do drift off, you probably needed it!  It’s perfectly safe, and the water is so buoyant that it is very difficult to turn over. If you did manage to roll over, the worst that could happen is waking up to a bit of salt in the eyes, which you can rinse with the freshwater spray bottle near you.

What if i am claustrophobic?

A lot of people express this concern at first but end up feeling safe and comfortable. Our tank is an open pool so there is no lid to close (like pod-style float tanks). Instead, the whole room has been sound, light and temperature controlled. You can also choose to keep the light on – you are in full control.

Do I float naked?

Most people don’t wear anything when floating, and this is what we recommend, but of course it’s up to you. The sensation of fabric against your skin can be distracting during your float, and being naked means you can feel truly free.  Would you wear a bathing suit in the bath?

How long do the benefits last for?

Benefits such as reduced anxiety and improved sleep have been scientifically proven to last for several days after a single session. However, everyone is different, and results vary. If you float for longer or more regularly, then there is a cumulative effect to the benefits.

Do I need to bring anything for the float session?

We provide everything you need to enjoy your floating experience: Fresh towels, a robe, earplugs, make-up removal wipes, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, as well as a hairdryer. Please bring any items with you that you would use following a shower to get ready, such as a hairbrush.

What kind of scientific evidence supports floatation therapy?

There have been many scientific studies on floating and its benefits since the 1950s. Some proven impacts include reduced pain, stress, and tension; increased relaxation and better sleep; lowered blood pressure and cortisol levels; improved muscle recovery and athletic performance; increased creativity and cognitive function.

What can I expect for my first float?

The majority of people emerge from their float feeling refreshed and relaxed, with a clearer head. The benefits are different for everyone, so it’s best to be open-minded about what you’ll experience. Sometimes it can take a few floats to learn how to switch off fully - so stick with it if you felt like you could have relaxed more deeply.

Can I float if I dye my hair or have had other hair treatments?

You must be certain that no hair dye will come out of your hair when you float. This is because it can contaminate the float solution. Some ways to test at home before you come to float include ensuring that no color comes out of your hair in the water when you shower, and that no color comes off on a white towel when you vigorously dry your hair. Talk to your hair stylist about floating after hair treatments such as Brazilian blow out or keratin.

How will I know when my float is over?

The end of the float is signaled by music, the pool light turning on, a chime and then the pump will start.

Can I float during pregnancy?

Like many things, floating is not advised during the first trimester.  It is also not recommended too soon after giving birth, until you have healed.  Other than those times, floating can give profound relief from the physical strains of pregnancy. If you are finding lying in bed uncomfortable, the feeling of weightlessness that floating offers will be a revelation.

Can I float if I am menstruating?

Yes, if you use a tampon or menstrual cup, as you would in a swimming pool.

What if I suffer with motion sickness?

If you suffer from severe motion sickness in other circumstances, there is a chance you could suffer from it in the pool. If you usually use medication to control your motion sickness, you may wish to consider doing so in the case of floating.

I can't swim - what if I sink?

No need to worry.  It is physically impossible to sink in the float environment. The density of the human body is about the same as water.  The Epsom salt solution is 30% more dense than water – that’s even more dense than the Dead Sea. Additionally, the water is only 10 inches deep, and you will float like a cork with your face above the water.

How is hygiene maintained?

We follow the Floatation Tank Association standards and meet provincial float tank guidelines enforced by Environmental Health Officers. We use a combination of hydrogen peroxide and UV light to disinfect the water. Furthermore, the water is fully cycled, filtered, and treated between every float.

I'm tall, will I fit in the pod?

The interior dimensions of the pool are 87”x54”.

What if I can't find the light button in the dark?

The button is on the right-hand side of the pool wall as you are floating. However, if you have trouble finding it, you can sit up, and the motion-activated room lights will turn on.

Can under 18s float?

Floating independently is for ages 16 and up. Children under 16 may float with a parent or guardian supervising the session from inside the room. If you are interested in helping your child try floating, don't hesitate to contact us to discuss this further.
